Part of the pleasure derived from supporting the Lennoxlove Book Festival these past 3 years comes from the satisfaction of contributing to the economic base of the community to which we owe so much.

The economic benefits are real enough but, working as we do in the investment field, it is easy to forget that material wealth can never be a worthwhile end in itself. It is what one does with it that matters.

The Festival serves to remind all of us, perhaps, that the most enduring benefits derive from qualities that are beyond price, from activities that lead us from self to higher planes, of the imagination, of aesthetic and emotional experience. Reading great books is one such experience.

We are privileged indeed to have been able to meet and hear each year so many of those whose creative skill adds light and depth to our lives. Long may the Festival continue. We welcome all of you, audience and authors alike, to what I am sure will be another very happy occasion.
